The main compliance schemes that your business must be aware of are the Energy Savings Opportunity Sceme (ESOS) and Streamlined Energy Carbon Reporting (SERC). These schemes take over from the Carbon Reduction Scheme (CRC).

ESOS is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for organisations in the UK that meet the qualification criteria. The Environment Agency is the UK scheme administrator.

It is absolutely vital that should you qualify for the schemes that you have procedures in place for assessments.

The below is not a complete list of your requirements but gives an outline of what is required.

For your assessment, you need to:

  1. Calculate your total energy consumption
  2. Identify your areas of significant energy consumption
  3. Appoint a lead assessor
  4. Notify the Environment Agency
  5. Keep records

SECR has been brought in to bring the benefits of carbon and energy reporting to more businesses. It covers a much wider group of organisation than the outgoing CRC Scheme. The intention of the scheme is to encourage energy efficiency measures, with both economic and environmental benefits. This should allow companies to cut costs and improve productivity at the same time as reducing carbon emissions.

Requiring companies to make disclosures on energy and carbon is also in line with the recommendations of the G20 Financial Stability Board’s Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures, by providing important information for investors and financial actors to help them navigate the transition to a sustainable, low carbon economy.

We have put together some more detailed guides on this which can be seen here ESOS and SECR
