Higher fines for fly-tipping

Increased fines promised for fly-tipping offenders

Rishi Sunak has promised to increase the upper limit on fines for fly-tipping from £400 to £1,000 as part of the UK government's plan to crack down on anti-social behaviour.

The PM has said the money raised from the fines will be kept by local authorities and used to “reinvest in clean up and enforcement”. Sunak also said that the government will provide the support to local councils to hand out more fines to "disrespectful offenders", with affected communities and local police having an input on the punishment for these offenders. As part of their proposed plans, the government will also begin to publish league tables detailing local authorities' performances on handling fly-tipping.

It's estimated that in the 2021/22 year, local authorities dealt with over a million fly-tipping incidents. If you're not using a licensed waste carrier, your waste could be fly-tipped instead of disposed of correctly. How to handle chemical waste safely!

Managing chemical waste can be a bit of a minefield. It needs to be stored and disposed of correctly to make sure that everyone who comes into contact with it is safe. But how do you do this? We sat down with Ross, one of our waste experts, to find out how you can stay safe with your business' chemical waste.

The most important thing with chemical waste? Storing it correctly. Ross said: "The best way to store chemical waste is in a sealed container within the original packaging which can then be placed in larger drums. These can be 60L to 250L. You can even store the waste in a locked safe, making sure that everyone who comes into contact with it is safe."
