Batteries cause blazes

Batteries cause increase in bin lorry fires

Have you noticed an increase in fires at waste sites and recycling plants in the news recently? In our local area there have been blazes at three different sites just this year, and over 600 fires in bin lorries carrying domestic waste in the UK have been reported in the last year. These risk lives, cause damage and cost an estimated £158m annually.

Why is this happening?   Batteries, in particular lithium-ion batteries found in every day items, can combust and cause fires when they are damaged, pierced or exposed to high heat – if they are disposed of in general waste they can easily cause fires.      Waste fires caused by batteries have increased three-fold due to households and businesses not disposing of batteries properly.

Don’t forget to dispose of your batteries properly, whether at home or in your business.  Check with your waste management provider or council if you’re unsure.

SECTOR FOCUS

Focus on food waste

Reducing food waste

In the news this week, M&S are removing their “use by” dates on  85% of their fresh fruit and vegetable products in an attempt to reduce food waste.   This follows other supermarkets – Morrisons and Co-opmaking similar moves.

Did you know that we throw away over 6.6 tonnes of food waste per year? Households generate around 70% of this – with 28% being fresh fruit or vegetables.  So it’s a great move by supermarkets to try and tackle food waste in supermarkets and households.
