Christmas is a time of joy, but it’s also a time of excess. Each year in the UK, the festive season brings staggering levels of waste that impact the environment. With a few simple changes, we can all celebrate more sustainably.

The Scale of Christmas Waste

  • 230,000 tonnes of food go uneaten and end up in the bin.
  • 160,000 Christmas trees are discarded rather than replanted or recycled.
  • Over 50,000 trees are felled to create wrapping paper, much of which isn’t recyclable due to glitter and coatings.
  • 39 million Christmas crackers are tossed away after a single use.

How to Waste Less This Christmas

1. Plan Your Meals

Avoid overbuying by planning festive meals carefully. Store leftovers creatively—think turkey sandwiches or festive soups—to reduce food waste.

2. Choose Sustainable Decorations

Opt for long-lasting, reusable decorations instead of single-use items. Consider crafting your own ornaments or buying second-hand.

3. Be Smart with Wrapping

Switch to recyclable or reusable wrapping paper. Fabric wraps, kraft paper, and ribbons make great eco-friendly alternatives.

4. Recycle Christmas Cards

An estimated 75% of Christmas cards end up in general waste. Recycle them or opt for e-cards to reduce paper waste.

5. Dispose of Trees Responsibly

If you use a real tree, check for local recycling programs. Better yet, buy a potted tree to reuse each year.

6. Rethink Crackers and Gifts

Choose crackers made from recyclable materials and focus on quality, meaningful gifts over quantity.

Make Christmas Merry and Green

Celebrating sustainably doesn’t mean compromising on joy. By making small, thoughtful changes, you can reduce waste, save money, and protect the planet. This Christmas, let’s pile up the memories, not the waste!
