Workplace Recycling Regulations in Wales – Understanding the New Policy

The new regulations focus on the separate disposal of six distinct recyclable materials within workplaces. Each material must be disposed of individually in its assigned waste stream and kept separate for collection.

In addition to the updated separation guidelines, there are restrictions on various waste disposal methods. These include directing all forms of food waste away from sewers, sending separately collected waste to either incineration or landfills, and directly sending wood waste to landfills.

The primary objective is to revolutionise the process of disposing and collecting recyclable materials, improving their quality and increasing the recyclable amount. This effort aims to keep materials in circulation for longer periods, creating valuable economic and environmental opportunities. In alignment with this goal, the Welsh Government has set a national target to recycle 70% of its waste by 2025 and eventually become a zero-waste nation by 2050.

Who will be impacted?

These legal requirements apply to the following:

All workplaces (businesses, public sector, and charitable organisations in Wales).

Those responsible for waste collection or arranging waste collection.

Those involved in collecting, receiving, keeping, treating, or transporting waste must keep it separate from other types of waste or substances.

Full details of commercial requirements can be found on the Welsh Government website here. NHS hospitals and private hospitals have an additional two years to comply with the new legislation.

What waste needs separation?

To comply with the new laws, targeted materials must be separated at the point of disposal, requiring dedicated tools, such as bins and skips. While some businesses may already have these tools, the implementation of six specific separation requirements may necessitate acquiring additional ones.

The six specified recyclable waste materials to be targeted for separate collection are:

Food Waste – for premises producing more than 5kg of food waste a week

Paper and Card

Glass

Metal, Plastic, Fibre-based Packaging – including plastic bottles & lids and steel & aluminium drinks cans

Unsold Small Electrical and Electronic Equipment (SWEEE)

Unsold Textiles
