Christmas Waste

It's the most wasteful time of the year!

It's estimated that household waste increases by 30% during the Christmas period. With wrapping paper, presents, and food packaging from a big Christmas dinner, all the packaging waste adds up.

That's why environmental organisations in the UK, such as Greenpeace and Keep Britain Tidy are urging the government to 'get tough' on packaging waste to help stop the increase in waste that the UK faces each festive period. They're also asking for the government to set targets to for reducing the amount of single-use plastic that's used and halving resource consumption. They also want a tougher plastic packaging tax in place. Wildlife and Countryside Link say that over 100,000 tonnes of plastic packaging are likely to be burned, exported overseas, or end up in landfill this festive period.

SECTOR FOCUS

Focus on packaging

It's nearly time to buy your PRNs!

It's nearly that time of year when your business needs to start purchasing Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs). It can be a bit of a confusing process so we're here to help.

Each year, businesses that meet the requirements for purchasing PRNs must calculate how much packaging waste they have handled over the last calendar year. Once they've done this, businesses then need to purchase enough PRNs to cover the amount of packaging waste they have produced. With the end of the year fast approaching, now is a great time to start thinking about calculating your obligations and purchasing PRNs.

Want more information on PRNs? Check out our blog here to find out whether your business needs to purchase PRNs and how to buy them.
