Your festival waste management checklist

Each year, music festivals generate around 25,800 tonnes of waste. With everything from leftover tents to discarded cutlery left after a festival, waste can be hard to manage. Have you got everything you need at your event to be prepared for each waste stream?

Food waste

If you’re providing catering for your events, it’s likely that there will be food waste. We have a zero to landfill approach to waste so can ensure that any food waste from your event will be recycled, boosting the environmental credits of your event and stopping your waste from ending up in landfill. Your food waste could be composted or even used to produce green energy so it’s important that you’re recycling your food waste.

You could also try to cut down on the amount of waste from food and drink vendors by switching to reusable and compostable cutlery and packaging. In 2019, Glastonbury banned the sale of single-use plastics on its site. They switched to reusable bottles and were able to save over one million plastic bottles from ending up in landfill. They also recycled over 140 tonnes of food waste and turned 14,000 litres of cooking oil into biofuel.

Portable toilets

Your visitors will need access to toilet facilities, so providing portable toilets are the solution. We can deliver toilet and shower cubicles and even take them away when you’re done with them. We know festival toilets don’t always have the best reputation. That’s why we can maintain them for the entire duration of your festival through our washroom service, so no one gets caught short. Extensive planning for festivals can keep you busy, so we’ll deliver and take away your portable at a time that’s convenient to you so that you can get back to kickstarting your event.

Bins and skips

It’s important your festival goers have somewhere to put their waste. Having lots of bins of different sizes is a great way to make sure your waste is put in the right place. You may need smaller wheelie bins for guests to put their rubbish in or larger 1100L bins for vendor’s waste. For larger amounts of waste, we can provide anything from 4-yard to 16-yard skips as well as even larger ‘Roll On Roll Off’ skips. All our events waste quotes are bespoke, so our team of experts can advise you on the right size, number, and locations of your bins to fit your festival’s needs and requirements. We can even separate the waste for you when it’s taken to a processing plant.

Litter pickers

You could provide all the bins in the world, but it’s likely that some waste will still end up on the ground. Having litter pickers to come in after your event is the best way to ensure you’re leaving your venue as clean as you found it. If not, you could be leaving yourself liable to heavy fines for leaving litter. The number of litter pickers you will need depends on the type of event you’re hosting as well as the duration. For example, if you’re hosting a three-day music festival with lots of food vendors and confetti, you’ll need a higher number of litter pickers. All our litter pickers are fully kitted out with all the equipment they need to litter pick, no matter the venue or weather. We employ our litter pickers directly, not through an agency, so we can keep your costs low, and sites clean.
